Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers is now all set to try his hands at a new challenge in T20. English county club Middlesex has reportedly roped in de Villiers for the upcoming season of the T20 Blast. He is currently plying his trade in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) for the Lahore Qalandars and will also be featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Middlesex will be desperately hoping that Rahman and de Villiers help them progress far in the competition after a forgettable campaign last year. They finished the season at the bottom of their group after managing to register just two wins in 14 games.
De Villiers, on the other hand, will be looking to make his impact for his new team too. The legendary batsman has been playing T20 cricket extensively since hanging up his boots last year. Since bidding adieu to international cricket, the Proteas star has played in the Caribbean Premier League, Mzansi Super League, Bangladesh Premier League.
Best in the business
One of the best batsmen in the world right now, AB de Villiers retired as an all-time great. He left his mark in all the formats and retired with more than 20,000 international runs. The right-handed batsman also holds the record for the fastest 50, fastest 100 and fastest 150 in ODIs, all coming against the Windies. He smashed a 31-ball 100 in Johannesburg in 2015 and hit a 66-ball 162 in the 2015 World Cup encounter.
His numbers in T20 is equally impressive. In 272 matches so far, he has scored more than 7,300 runs at an average of 36 and an amazing strike-rate of 149.
The club is yet to confirm the news but Cricbuzz has reported the Lord’s-based outfit is likely to officially announce the signing later this week. De Villiers is set to be Middlesex’s second big signing of the season. Earlier this month, the club had announced the signing of Afghanistan spin sensation Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
