Lahore Qalandars led by young guns fired on the night to thump Multiply Titans by 15 runs and clinch the inaugural 2018 Abu Dhabi T20 trophy on Saturday.
Batting first, Qalandars could muster a score of just 148 runs. In a thrilling climax, Titans required some 23 runs from 12 balls but Shaheen Afridi bowled a sensational penultimate over picking Heino Kuhn's key wicket and conceding just four runs. In the final over, Harris Rauf defending 19 runs gave away only four and bowled some brilliant yorkers.
Better, he steered Qalandars to the title with Albie Morkel's scalp from the last ball. Shaheen and Haris, the youngsters from Qalandars, winning the battle of nerves against a veteran like Morkel and dangerous Chris Morris was a pleasing sight to watch at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Earlier, Qalandars skipper Sohail Akhtar continued his rich form with 56 runs from 47 balls. He was supported well by Mohammad Faizan (32). However, quick wickets pushed Qalandars back. But then Phil Salt hit a 15-ball 26 to take Qalandars to 148 runs.
In reply, Tony de Zorzi and Henry Davids fell early. Theunis de Bruyn (37) and Rivaldo Moonsamy (27) steadied the innings but at the end Shaheen and Rauf got the job done for Pakistan side.
Shaheen, the Man of the Match, was elated and said he used to practice bowling yorkers and it is a key weapon in his arsenal.
Skipper Sohail said the victory was special as it was achieved by the newcomers and youngsters in the team.
